Hi all!
I've got a question. What acomidations if any do your teachers give you? What acomidations have you requested? For example, if you get extra time for taking tests, exams put in to accessible format etc..
I'll be starting school next month and they've asked me what acomidations the professores can give me that I'll need to do the work propperly. I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on this matter.
If you need accommodations for tests, such as getting them in an accessible format or extra time, make sure you speak with the students with disabilities office at your school as soon as possible.. they also help you get whatever books you need in an accessible format. Also, tell them if you need notetakers or tutoring for any of your classes. If you know who your professors are, it might be a good idea to email them a week or 2 before class starts and let them know that you have a disability and that you need accommodations. Ask them if they can email you the syllabus and any other handouts before class. The students with disabilities office may give you letters for you to give to your professors so that they have a better idea of what you need in order for you to successfully do the work.
hope this helps.. I'll post if I think of anything else.
Thank you so much for your help I really appreciate it! :)
However, when you said a note taker..do you mean an actual physical note taker or a person to take notes? Just wondering if you can clear that up lol..
Oh sorry I meant a person to take notes in class... although you never know how good/helpful the notes will be, and someone at the students with disabilities office would have to put them in an accessible format anyway. personally I prefer to take notes on my laptop and record the lecture on my victor stream in case I miss something.. I also find that I can sometimes remember and understand the lecture better if I can listen to it more than once. Do you have a computer or braille note or some type of device you can use for recording?
Hope this helps; if you have anymore questions please feel free to ask me... good luck! :)
Ask your professors to send you all assignments and handouts ahead of class so you'll know what is being discussed and you can read the same material as your classmates. If your professors don't have something in an electronic format, be sure to ask that they give it to someone in disability services so it is scanned and sent to you. When your professors write anything on the board they should speak aloud what they're writing or drawing.
Thanks! That last one about the instructor speaking out loud while writing or drawing something is so practical I never thought of that! :) Lol! Thanks! :)
all helpful comments.
I've also asked for
triple time
if you have lots of equipment like I do and need a room ask for a single with the disabilities office.
yes, both a notetaker and a person to take notes is great, and ask that they e-mail you I get it e-mailed to me.
ask for conversions. I have all my documents converted to .doc so I can read it on my bt. I send my pdfs to them too.
If you have trouble getting around you may be able to ask for the campus transport to drive you or be on there list just in case you ever need it.

all written comments to me are suppose to be told to me or typed out and sent to me.
I also have a reader or I could ask for one who's suppose to read everything else that is non convertable. but professors saying it aloud is very good too. I have access to a lab assistance
I could use my computer in class if necessary
also I have preferential sitting that means I get to sit in front.
